چکیده

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2004 to May 2005 to determine the most effective kind of trellis for the rice-cum-vegetable production system. The treatments consisted of five crop combinations viz. C0: rice alone i.e. control, C1: rice + bottle gourd, C2: rice + white gourd, C3: rice + snake gourd and C4: rice + bitter gourd, and four levels of trellises viz. T1: flat trellis, T2: T-trellis (180 cm breadth), T3: T-trellis (240 cm breadth) and T4: X-trellis (cross trellis). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Vegetable seeds were sown directly in the pit made on ails of Boro rice field. Later, vegetable crops were supported by trellis made with bamboo and plastic rope arrangements. Results showed that yield and yield contributing characters of Boro rice along with vegetable and rice equivalent yields varied significantly due to crop combination, nature of trellis and their interactions. The trellis-grown bitter gourd (C4) and bottle gourd (C1) did not significantly reduce rice yields compared to that obtained from sole rice plot. Grain yields reductions due to trellis-grown vegetable were just marginal. Regarding vegetable yield, white gourd (C2) on the ails of Boro rice plots gave the highest yield of 14.52 tha followed by 9.73 tha of bottle gourd (C1). In respect of cost of production, both flat trellis (T1) and T-trellis with 180 cm breadth (T2) were found to be the most suitable trellises for Boro rice-cum-vegetable cultivation on the ails of

Effects of Climate Change on the Yield and Cropping Area of Major Food Crops: A Case of Bangladesh

The crops that we grow for food need specific climatic conditions to show better performance in view of economic yield. A changing climate could have both beneficial and harmful effects on crops. Keeping the above view in mind, this study is undertaken to investigate the impacts of climate change (viz. changes in maximum temperature, minimum temperature, rainfall, humidity and sunshine) on the ...

Sustaining productivity in boro (winter) season using minimal water through dry direct seeding of rice M. M. RAHMAN AND M. M. MASOOD

The sustainability of rice productivity in Bangladesh is likely to face major threat due to water shortage during boro (winter season). The conventional transplanted boro rice requires huge amount of irrigation water due to wastage of various means. It is an imperative task that water saving production technology is needed to replace the conventional system for sustaining boro rice production i...

Effects of arsenic and its interaction with phosphorus on yield and arsenic accumulation in rice

A study was made on the effect of arsenic (As) and As X P interaction in Boro rice and its residual effect in succeeding T. Aman rice. Arsenic was added to soil (having 2.6 ppm initial As) @ 0, 15 and 30 mg As kg -1 from Na2HAsO4.7H2O and phosphorus @ 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg P kg from KH2PO4. Each pot had received 100 ppm N, 40 ppm K and 25 ppm S from urea, MoP and gypsum, respectively. The gra...
